Grue’s Celebrity Picks: Tom Costabile, director of Voodoo!!

Welcome to Celebrity Picks. This time we have an amazing director, writer, and producer. His name is Tom Costabile. Tom has created a buzz in the horror world already for 2017. He made this horror film called Voodoo. If you want to know more about Voodoo then check on this site as I posted the trailer and info about the film. The trailer for Voodoo has been banned by Facebook for being too offensive and gory. I don’t know about all of you, but when a horror movie trailer gets banned for being too gory and offensive, that makes me want to see the movie even more. I watched the trailer and this movie looks really good. Tom runs a company called HyperCube Films, LTD. He also has some films in pre-production called The Smallest River in Almirante, S.E.R.E. Shadow Uprising, and A Little Dirty. I now bring to you Tom Costabile’s Top 8 Favorite Horror films:
The Exorcist:
So powerful. Still to this day. The psychological effect you receive from this film is extraordinary. To this day no other film has created the emotional reaction I had when seeing The Exorcist for the first time. The box at the movie rental stores showing Max Von Sydow staring at the house even terrified me. I felt like I was catching a glimpse into true supernatural and it’s carried with me my whole life.
The Silence of the Lambs:
In my opinion, this is one of the most intelligent films in history. The dialogue between Clarice and Hannibal is perfect. It’s intelligent, raw, and engaging. The style that Demme shot it in was so seedy. I felt like I caught a true glimpse into the world of serial killers and I believe that’s why it’s still so effective almost 30 years later. Hannibal was a monster that in many, many ways truly exists somewhere in the US right now and that will forever be the case. That in itself is terrifying.
The Exorcist 3:
I know I mentioned The Exorcist already but I have to mention this film. It’s incredibly hypnotic to me. I believe this was Blatty’s second feature as a director and he harnessed the fear that was captured in the original Exorcist by Friedkin so well which was a master class. This film doesn’t really get the credit it deserves. It’s never really discussed when talking about “great horror movies” but that makes it even better perhaps.
Halloween:
Nobody can say enough about Halloween. It’s terrifying, it’s fun, it’s just a classic. The idea that something that wants to kill you cannot be destroyed and he just keeps coming back, and back, and back is horrific. It spawned so many stories of similar sensibilities but Michael Meyers will always be my favorite boogey man 🙂
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:
This movie was crazy. A whole other level than 99% of the horror movies that existed up to 1974 and even still to this day in many ways. Hooper on a shoe string terrified everyone in the country with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don’t know of another movie before it that showed that level of gore and demented characters on full display. When I pop in Texas Chainsaw I’m like the 2 dudes from Summer School laughing and smiling from ear to ear at every kill. it’s so good.
An American Werewolf in London:
This was just classic. For some reason, when I was a teen, it was playing on the Comedy Channel all the time and I never understood that at all. I was 6 when I saw this for the first time and I was petrified when I saw him change. Clive Barker’s makeup and effects in this movie is just perfection. Before this film, when it came to werewolves, we had the classics. The Wolf Man, Werewolf of London, things like that, and this was on a whole other level. You really felt like you witnessed a human being turning into a werewolf. For a 6 year old who didn’t understand that movies were make believe this scarred me man 🙂 I’m 37 and when I wanna eat some popcorn and watch a fun flick this is what I pop in my DVD player.
The Omen 2:
This was awesome. This one was better than the original to me. You had Damien discovering he’s the anti-christ and totally accepting it and running with it. Again, I was a kid when I saw this, probably the actor’s same age or close to, and I went to Catholic school. I was an altar boy. To think that you have that kind of destiny and you accept it and harness it and run with it – that’s intense. It wasn’t your standard horror movie but the themes it was dealing with was hard core and from a story standpoint, it’s stellar.
Hellraiser:
Hellraiser was awesome!! It’s just so gory and sick and twisted you can’t help but love it, man! Like Texas Chainsaw, it just hits a nerve that makes you smile when you see the disgusting acts this one pulls off. The costumes on the cenobites and their relentlessness as characters to take people to hell is terrifying and fun all at the same time. The little puzzle box can take you to hell if you put it together – awesome. Those guys being the ones to do it – hell yeah. The blood and gore – perfect. The family’s storyline – insane. I don’t know if it’s possible to call yourself a horror fan and not adore Hellraiser 🙂
