.

HALLOWEEN:

John Carpenter’s unforgettable scoring of the film has been emblazoned in my mind since my pre-adolescent years. The movie is the perfect blend of Americana living disrupted by a town that has forgotten its most important resident…Michael Myers.

.

.

..

CANDYMAN:

Besides being the first mainstream film that I could remember with a black central character, it is an amazing feat that was totally unexpected when I first saw it. the tie in between slavery and forbidden love and the slave haunting his “victims” for his own form of retribution and reparations.

.

.

.

THE THING:

Once again John Carpenter makes my list for being ahead of his time in the making of his films. This film builds tension by using what we think we know against us. It is horrifying until you find out who is who.. Oh and the black guy lives until the end….(Laughs).

.

.

THE EAGLES- HOTEL CALIFORNIA:

Plain and simple…..that guitar solo in the song’s final 2 minutes is a piece of heaven for me…

.

.

.

THE CARPENTERS- SING:

While not a rock song…this is just a song that makes you feel good. Karen Carpenter is one of the purest voices ever to be recorded. She is pure innocence recorded and the songs they made can heal wounds.

.

.

.

ALIEN:

What I can say is ..the tagline on this movie terrified me as a young kid and simultaneously fascinated my imagination with space and the unknown. “In space, no one can hear your scream”. That still terrifies me.

.

.

.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS:

If only for the last moment when Donald Sutherland methodically raises his hand, points his finger and shrieks his shrilling alien alarm to expose his friend as a human and then the camera zooms into the source of the sound…his jaw dropped mouth and the audience is stuck in this nightmare of an alien invasion. Also, Leonard Nimoy was just iconically spooky in this departure from playing Spack.

.

.

.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD:

When you know a genre so well and have watched it your entire life, how refreshing for someone to find the hidden gems of humor in the zombie genre. This film finds the hypocrisy, the irony and the emotional spine of the genre in this horror-comedy.

.

.

.

THE FLY:

Geena Davis warning a one night stand of her infected boyfriend to “be afraid, be very afraid”. This movie turned this weird Vincent Price story into an iconic pop culture phenom and solidified Goldblum as bankable. His compulsive neurosis was fascinating to behold.

.

.

.

THE CONJURING:

So amazing to be a part of the franchise and the Conjuring Universe that I am such a fan of. In college I booked Ed and Lorraine Warren as guest at Fresno State and they charmed us with their tales. I have been familiar with their battles with demonic forces for decades. This film was the real deal and made it that much more terrifying.
